Churches and dictatorships easily lapse into hyperbole.

In a glossy coffee table book on a retiring senior cleric someone wrote about him: “All he does is for the glory of God, who has gifted him with diverse talents.”

Is a sentence like that compatible with a 'synodal church’? It sounds more like a tribute being paid to a retiring apparatchik of the former German Democratic Republic.

Churches and dictatorships easily lapse into hyperbole. Maybe the cult of the individual.
