Far too many defined as throwaway people

The weekend issue of The Irish Times carries an obituary of Kathy Boudin, an American militant, who was imprisoned for her part in a Brinks robbery in New York in 1981.

She was released from prison in 2002, having spent 22 years behind bars.

She spent many years of her life on the run having been born into a privileged family.

In an interview in 2021 for the obituary she said: “There are tremendous resources waiting to be realised in those who are too often defined as throwaway people.”

She married ‘co-terrorist’ David Gilbert. They divorced while in prison and reunited last year after Gilbert’s 75-year sentence was commuted and he was freed.

Kathy is survived by Gilbert and her son Chesa, who was elected San Francisco’s district attorney in 2019.

She was born on May 19, 1943 and died on May Day 2022.

An interesting life.
