German Chancellor Angela Merkel in reply pointed out that she knows first-hand what is it like not to be free. And then spoke about what it means to be free and independent in the Federal Republic of Germany.
Ms Merkel was born in Hamburg but spent her childhood in Templin in the former German Democratic Republic.
She speaks fluent Russian and did her doctorate in quantum chemistry.
And then there is the President of the United States of America.
Mr Trump insulted Germany yesterday.
